Memorial service for Navy photographer who joined regional daily

A memorial service is to be held in honour of a former Royal Navy photographer who went on to join the daily newspaper in the UK’s biggest naval base.

As previously reported on HTFP, David Morris, former senior staff photographer of Portsmouth daily The News, died aged 84 on Boxing Day.

Before joining The News, David had served as a Royal Navy photographer, visiting many places around the world on board Her Majesty’s ships including a stint on the Royal Yach Brittania.

Following a private family cremation earlier this year, David’s son Steve Morris has now arranged a memorial service and wake which former colleagues are welcome to attend.

The service will be held at 11.30am Thursday 14th March 2024 at St George’s Church, St George’s Walk, Waterlooville, Hampshire PO7 7EH, with parking available in the town centre or the nearby ASDA car park.

It will be followed at 1pm by a wake at The Cowplain Social Club, 54, London Road, Cowplain PO8 8EN.

Among other places, David served in the Falkland Islands and Borneo where is pictured fully equipped with two Rolleiflex cameras, a cine camera and a machine gun.

He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his Navy service.
