King’s cancer diagnosis leads regional dailies

The news that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer led many of today’s big regional dailies.

Buckingham Palace’s statement on the King’s illness was issued shortly before 6pm last night, allowing sufficient time for today’s papers to change their front pages.

All of today’s national dailies with the exception of the FT led on the news along with many of the big UK regionals.

A round-up of front pages from regional and Scottish dailies including The Herald, The Scotsman, The Yorkshire Post, the Press & Journal, the Northern Echo, the Belfast Telegraph and the Manchester Evening News can be seen below.

The Northern Echo sent the King a front page goodwill message with the headline: “We’re with you, Your Majesty.”

Posting on X, editor Gavin Foster said: “Most of us have been affected by this terrible disease in some way. In times like this we all need support, as do our loved ones.

“It’s been warming to see the region rally round our King and his family. We wish him well.”

Elsewhere Yorkshire Post editor James Mitchinson took aim at people contrasting the speed at which the King is receiving treatment with the experiences of other cancer patients.

In an editorial, he wrote: “Anyone callous enough to make such comparisons should take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror, and ask quite what it is inside them that takes them to such a cruel place in their mind’s eye.

“Pauper or prince, cancer does not discriminate. It is a destructive disease that rips families to pieces on a daily basis, with no regard for who you are or what your privileges might be.”
