A weekly newspaper website topped the table for user engagement in December after entering the monthly ‘chart’ for the first time.

Visitors to cambrian-news.co.uk – the website of Aberystwyth-based weekly the Cambrian News – spent an average of ten minutes or more on the site, earning the number one ranking for engagement in the monthly figures compiled by IPSOS.

Although the Tindle-owned title boasted an audience of just over 77,000 unique visitors – a fraction of the 9m-plus users of the Manchester Evening News and Bimingham Live – its users stayed longer than on any other UK local news website.

However Newsquest titles continued to dominate the rest of the ‘Top 10′ for user engagement, with Norwich’s eveningnews24.co.uk, Bradford’s thetelegraphandargus.co.uk and warringtonguardian.co.uk all seeing big year-on-year increases in minutes per user.

In terms of overall audience and page views, the big city Reach titles once again retained their ascendancy, although the MEN website saw a 39pc drop in its unique user numbers from 16.1m in December 2022 to 9.8m last month.

Birmingham Live pipped the MEN to the top of the page view chart with 55.4m views to its Manchester stablemate’s 54.9m.

Unsurprisingly, the 13 Reach websites that closed on 30th November saw their audience figures well down while continuing to attract significant traffic during December.

For instance, although Staffordshire Live saw its page view figure fall by 75pc year-on-year, it still attracted 588,564 views in December despite not being updated after 30 November.

Websites which are ‘untagged’ are reported based on observed panel behaviour. These sites can experience volatility from month to month.
