A former editor who spent more than 20 years in the regional press is set for a new career as a writer of historical fiction.
David Clensy, pictured, has signed a five-book deal to write a series of World War II naval thrillers.
It comes after he won a writing competition organised by historical fiction specialist Sapere Books which offered budding writers the chance to turn their book pitches into a series.
The publisher pitched six briefs that writers could choose from for their entries, ranging from Gothic mysteries to naval thrillers, with David winning the latter category.
David was editor of South West Business Insider until 2021 and also worked for the Derby Telegraph, Hull Daily Mail, Gloucestershire Echo, Western Daily Press and Bristol Post during the course of his career.
He now works as a senior copywriter for engineering consultancy Buro Happold in Bath.
Said David: “I am absolutely delighted to be working with Sapere Books on this series of naval thrillers, which will allow readers to immerse themselves in the kinds of extraordinary experiences endured by our Royal Navy and Merchant Navy sailors during the Second World War.
“It is a genuine honour to have this opportunity to commemorate the dedication of a generation who served our nation so valiantly. I hope readers will join me on what promises to be a thrilling journey with the characters across the five books.”
Sapere Books’ editorial assistant Claire Smith added: “David’s inspired use of twin main characters joining up to the Royal and Merchant Navies is a fantastic way to explore the thrilling action and perils faced by both services during the war.”
