Daily publishes edition entirely produced by women

A daily newspaper marked International Women’s Day by publishing an edition entirely produced by female journalists.

Friday’s edition of Scottish daily The National was produced by a seven-strong team of women headed by editor Laura Webster.

Content included an interview with top barrister Helena Kennedy on how the justice system could be made fairer to women, and a feature on how Scotland is showing solidarity with women and girls in Gaza.

The Newsquest-owned title’s special edition emulated the feat of The Scotsman nearly 30 years ago when it produced an all-female edition, rebranding as The Scotswoman for one day.

Said Laura: “The legendary Lesley Riddoch produced the Scotswoman’s all-women edition in 1995 – but nothing like this has been done in my lifetime.

“I am so proud of the edition that the team has produced. It both highlights the challenges facing women in Scotland and around the world, and celebrates the incredible successes of women in so many sectors.

“We’re looking at the women fighting climate change, the women improving breastfeeding rates, the women crofters thriving in a male-dominated industry, how the justice system can be improved for women in light of tragic cases, and so much more.

“The situation for women in the media has vasty improved since that Scotswoman special. But in 2024 in Scotland, 80pc of our political editors are white men.

“If our newsrooms are unbalanced, the stories we tell will be too. I hope this edition can inspire change in the broader media landscape and demonstrate why the perspectives and views of women must be represented.”
