Weekly’s wrap marks silverware success for patch football team

A weekly newspaper celebrated sporting silverware coming to its patch with a commemorative edition including a front page wraparound.

The Halifax Courier ran the special edition after FC Halifax Town won the FA Trophy, the premier knockout tournament for English non-league football clubs.

Town, known as The Shaymen, triumphed after beating Gateshead 1-0 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 21 May.

The Courier’s edition, published on Thursday, also featured an eight-page supplement inside.

Dominic Brown, editor-in-chief of National World’s Yorkshire Weeklies Group, told HTFP: “What an incredible weekend of sport for Halifax. Excitement had been building all month leading up to Sunday’s FA Trophy final, and it was great to see FC Halifax Town get the job done at Wembley.

“It was an unforgettable day for the players and also the fans, who travelled down to London in their thousands to cheer on their side. So it was only right that we celebrated the Shaymen’s achievements in this week’s Courier.

“Special thanks to our reporters Tom Scargill and Adam Cheshire and photographer Bruce Fitzgerald who were at Wembley for us on the big day and provided excellent coverage which was brilliantly put together by our page designer Michelle Lockwood.

“We hope our readers enjoy all the interviews, features, analysis and photos – and keep a copy of the special souvenir supplement to look back on in years to come with lots of happy memories.”
