Sister dailies celebrate 40 years since football club’s European victory

Two sister dailies have celebrated four decades since a continental sporting victory for its patch.

The Aberdeen Evening Express and Press & Journal marked 40 years since Aberdeen Football Club won the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

To mark the occasion, the DC Thomson-owned dailies ran a special anniversary print edition and has also produced fresh analysis of Aberdeen’s victory over Real Madrid using data and digital tools.

The anniversary further provided a splash for the Evening Express on Saturday, pictured.

Craig Walker, editor of The Press and Journal and Evening Express, told HTFP: “Aberdeen winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup is arguably the greatest achievement of any club in Scottish football and something the people of Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland as a whole are very proud of.

“The 40th anniversary was always going to be a big one and we decided to create a one-off 80-page publication packed with never before published images from our archives and exclusive interviews from the heroes of Gothenburg, including [manager] Sir Alex Ferguson, to mark the occasion – and the feedback from fans has been brilliant.

“Our sport and AV team also created exclusive video content and used data analysis to reveal if Sir Alex was correct in his claim the Dons battered Real Madrid on the night, giving us first-class content across our print and digital platforms.

“The club and players from 1983 received the Freedom of the City during a ceremony at Pittodrie, with the great images captured by our photographer allowing us to mark the occasion with a special poster front page.”
