Readers get rare chance to examine weekly’s archives at open day

Readers were given rare access to a weekly newspaper’s archive when it held an open day for the public.

The Hampshire Chronicle threw open the doors of its Winchester office for the city’s Heritage Open Days event.

Editor Kimberley Barber, head of news Andrew Napier, reporters Toby Oliver and Adele Bouchard, and digital editor Megan Stanley were all present to show readers around.

Historic archives, which are usually in locked storage in Weymouth where the Newsquest-owned Chronicle is printed, were brought over for the day, including some newspapers dating back to 1901.

Kimberley said: “It was so great to meet so many people in such a short amount of time.

“We really enjoyed speaking to everyone and showing them around.

“The Chronicle has been part of Winchester for more than 250 years so it was our pleasure to share some of that with people as part of the brilliant Heritage Open Days event.”
