Prize doubles for Midlands students at annual awards

Three journalism students each landed a brace of prizes as this year’s Midlands Media Student Awards were handed out.

The annual awards, organised by Birmingham Press Club, saw Nicholas Gascoyne from Leicester’s De Montfort University win the coveted Student of the Year accolade.

Nicholas, pictured below with Press Club president Bob Warman, also won the Feature Writer of the Year award for his portfolio of articles on “weird, obscure and extraordinary real people.”

His work included an interview with a former vegan who swopped broccoli for raw meat and fermented cow’s milk in his hunt for perfectt health.

There was also a double win for Birmingham City University student Kirsty Card, now a Daily Star video news reporter, who won both the Digital Journalist and Data & Investigations categories.

Judges commended her for a strong, well-researched piece which posed the question ‘Are parents putting their children at risk for cash on social media?’

Nottingham Trent University student Shing Hei Yip also walked away with two prizes, with his entry about Chinese consulate protests in Nottingham winning him the Social Media Video of the Year prize, while his portfolio depicting “A Year in Nottingham” gave him the edge in the Photography category.
