Community news title marks golden anniversary with new book

A community news title has marked 50 years in operation with the publication of a new book.

Volunteer-run publication Fitzrovia News has been circulating in the central London neighbourhood for half a century.

The title began life as ‘Tower’ newspaper but later became Fitzrovia Neighbourhood News, and ultimately the mainly online Fitzrovia News.

The book, entitled Fitzrovia News: Celebrating 50 Years, is edited by Nick Bailey, Sue Blundell and current editor Linus Rees, and looks back at the history of the News including some stand-out stories from its archives.

Linus told HTFP: “The book has been well received with people telling us they have really enjoyed reading it.

“One reader told us: ‘What you are all doing is really important. Fitzrovia is a very special place and it’s important that it’s accurately documented and celebrated. Congratulations to you all.’

“Many others said they enjoyed looking back at past events and it had encouraged them to dig out old photographs and share them with their neighbours.”

The book is free and available from the Fitzrovia Community Centre in Foley Street.  Copies will also be available at a village fete to be held on Sunday 13 August at the community centre.
