NCTJ to create new industry standard qualification for editors

Laura Adams 2022A new qualification that will create an industry standard for editorial management is being launched by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

The NCTJ has announced the new qualification as part of a leadership programme with the hope of “developing the next generation of editorial leaders”.

The qualification, to be launched in the autumn, will be preceded by a series of classes aimed at both early-career editorial managers and established leaders “who are looking to refresh and enrich their leadership skills”.

The programme includes masterclasses on being an effective communicator, motivating and engaging the team, managing change in the newsroom, diversity and inclusion in leadership, and safety and resilience for editorial leaders.

Other courses on leading with confidence, employment law, time management and prioritisation, managing hybrid and remote working patterns and understanding imposter syndrome are also available.

Laura Adams, pictured, head of the NCTJ’s Journalism Skills Academy, said: “We are delighted to be launching our innovative leadership programme which has been created by journalists for journalists.

“We are aware that the editorial environment often presents unique challenges to managers and we want to reflect that in this flexible training scheme.

“We hope it will support and empower managers to thrive while developing the next generation of editorial leaders.”

The training begins in June with a series of virtual sessions including three-hour masterclasses and shorter lunch and learns, while the following month blocks of in-person training will begin.
