Launch editor leaves sports title in ‘upstairs’ move with publisher

Jonny McFarlaneA sports news website’s launch editor is leaving the title after being promoted to a new role with a regional publisher.

Jonny McFarlane, pictured, has announced he is moving “upstairs” to become head of  digital sport at Newsquest after two years running Rangers Review.

The subscription-based site, which covers Glasgow’s Rangers Football Club, was launched in 2021.

Reporter Joshua Barrie will step up to edit the title.

Announcing the move, Jonny wrote on Twitter: “After an incredible two years building Rangers Review from scratch I’m handing over the reins to new editor Joshua Barrie.

“I couldn’t be passing the torch over to a better-equipped person as it continues to grow and develop.

“I’m moving ‘upstairs’ to a job that involves the sport content and projects for our parent company.

“I will still be around but Josh will now deal with the day-to-day. Thanks to the many people who supported us over my two years at the helm.”

“I’m delighted to be taking on this new role as Newsquest Scotland’s brands continue their rapid digital transformation.

Speaking to HTFP, he said: “The Rangers Review has been a project close to my heart but any sense of regret at moving away from the day-to-day there is tempered by the knowledge I’m leaving it in the hands of one of Scotland’s most talented young journalists.

“Josh shares my vision to build a brand people genuinely like with in-depth coverage that’s worth paying for.

“Under his guidance, I expect the site to grow even further as we launch our App and further expand our hugely popular video content.”

Joshua added: “Looking forward to a new challenge and thankful to Jonny for all the support and vision in creating this project.”
