Former daily editor launches bid to become MP

Richard Walker 2022A former editor is bidding to become an MP in a fresh attempt to successfully run for political office.

Richard Walker, who was founding editor of pro-Scottish independence daily The National and also edited its Glasgow-based Newsquest sister title the Sunday Herald wants to stand for the Scottish National Party in the Central Ayrshire seat.

The constituency has been held by SNP incumbent Philippa Whitford, who is standing down at the next General Election, since 2015, and the party is currently defending a majority of more than 5,000 over the second-placed Tories.

The seat was previously held by Labour.

Richard’s fresh bid for election comes after he failed in 2020 to be selected as the SNP’s candidate for Member of the Scottish Parliament in the Ayr constituency.

He currently teaches journalism at the University of Strathclyde.

Richard, pictured, posted on X: “I am proud to announce I have been nominated as a potential Westminster candidate for Central Ayrshire – my home.

“Looking forward to meeting as many people as possible at upcoming hustings. I’ll be seeking to convince members I have the experience and passion the job demands.”

Scott McFarlane and Annie McIndoe are also fighting to be the SNP’s candidate for the seat.
