Eurovision fans treated to souvenir as Echo hails Liverpool’s host city turn

The Liverpool Echo treated Eurovision fans to a souvenir special after its patch hosted the song contest at the weekend.

The Sunday Echo splashed on the victory of Swedish singer Loreen after Saturday night’s competition, hosted in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine.

The Echo had previously campaigned for the city to host the contest after it was revealed the 2023 event would be held in the United Kingdom.

Editor Maria Breslin has praised her team’s coverage of both the build-up and the contest itself.

Maria told HTFP: “Liverpool didn’t just host Eurovision, it embraced it in all its sequinned and glittering glory and welcomed thousands of visitors to the city with open arms.

“Not once did we forget we were staging the contest on behalf of the people of Ukraine and we tried to always reflect that in our coverage.

“We live blogged the grand final, and the semis, but our real focus was the people on the streets having the time of their lives and wearing their best outfits. Our amazing photographers captured the party atmosphere perfectly.

“We might be a little bit biased but the past few weeks have shown Liverpool at its brilliant best and I think we reflected that with a souvenir print special, some eye-catching front pages, excellent live reporting and insider guides to help visitors really make the most of what the city has to offer.

“It has been an action-packed few weeks and I’m so proud of the team. They’ve worked tremendously hard to deliver the quality coverage our audience expects.

“I suspect Eurovision boss Martin Osterdahl was only half joking when he said he wanted Liverpool to host every year.”
