Richard MontgomeryAn editor who spent more than half a century with the same newspaper has died aged 92.

Tributes have been paid to Richard Montgomery, who edited the Tyrone Courier.

An obituary by Armagh I described him as a “giant of a figure within the newspaper industry” who was “renowned for his fair and impartial manner, a friendly individual and a consummate professional”.

It added: “Mr Montgomery could turn his hand to anything and had reported on all manner of news and features during the course of his long and seldom-achieved run in journalism.

“He was also gifted behind the lens, being a very talented photographer, making him an all-rounder when it came to filing content for his title.

“His was a familiar face around Dungannon, across County Tyrone and beyond for many, many years and his family and many friends have been deeply saddened by his passing.”

Richard was married to Joy, father to Ann, Helen and Julie, father-in-law to Stephen, Mark and Martin and grandfather to Georgina, William, Caragh, Erin and Isabelle. He died on Friday and his funeral was held yesterday.
