Daily’s special celebrates club’s first Wembley cup final appearance

A regional daily has celebrated a football team’s first appearance in a Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The Plymouth Herald has marked Plymouth Argyle’s forthcoming EFL Trophy final appearance against Bolton Wanderers with the ‘Argyle at Wembley’ supplement.

This 40-page edition, which went on sale at the price of £2.50, contains exclusive interviews with Steven Schumacher, captain Joe Edwards and goalkeeping duo Callum Burton and Mike Cooper.

Michelle Owen, the host of Sky Sports’ live coverage of the final, also talked to the Herald for the supplement.

Argyle at Wembley

Material from the Herald’s archives with the history of Argyle’s other Wembley appearances features in the supplement too.

The club beat Darlington 1-0 in 1996 at the old Wembley Stadium and then the 2-0 defeat by AFC Wimbledon in 2016 after it was rebuilt.

Herald football reporter Chris Errington told HTFP: “Given the way the newspaper world is, it has made a refreshing change to work on our 40-page standalone to mark Argyle’s Papa Johns Trophy final against Bolton at Wembley on Sunday.

“There seems to have been a lot of enthusiasm for it, not only in local shops but also with good online sales.

“Fortunately, we were able to get some exclusive interviews with Argyle manager Steven Schumacher, captain Joe Burton and goalkeeper Callum Burton, whose three saves in the penalty-out shoot-out success against Cheltenham Town in the semi-finals earned their place at Wembley.

“That gave us some good content to build the supplement around.

“It was also very much a team effort, with my colleagues Elliot Ball and Andy Phillips both contributing stories, while the design and page layout was expertly done by Stuart James and Scott Squires.

“It has been fun to do something like this again. We are just hoping for an Argyle win now.”

The match will kick off at 3pm this Sunday.
