Daily’s office departure after 120 years brings end to city’s ‘Fleet Street’

A city’s own version of Fleet Street has lost its tag after a daily newspaper moved out of its office after 120 years.

The Irish News has said farewell to Donegall Street, its home since 1905, to move to the Fountain Centre, home to its sister operation Q Radio.

In its heyday, Donegall Street and the surrounding area was also home to fellow newspapers the Belfast Telegraph, Belfast News Letter and The Northern Whig.

Some national papers also had satellite offices in the area.

Editor Noel Doran said: “Our office has served us magnificently for almost 120 years and the place is steeped in newspaper folklore across all of its departments.

“It has unfortunately become too big and too old for our needs, and progress dictates that we reinvent ourselves in a state of the art complex only a short distance away in College Street.

“However, our last day in Donegall Street is still a poignant one for the present staff and everyone who has ever worked there.”
