Daily pays tribute to Glenys Kinnock following her death aged 79

A regional daily has paid tribute to the ‘dedicated and passionate’ Baroness Glenys Kinnock following the Labour Party stalwart’s death aged 79.

The Western Mail ran with an emotive front-page poster design, an inside two-page spread and a leader on the former peer, MEP and long-time wife of ex-Labour leader Neil Kinnock.

Her pensive image on the front page, pictured below, was overlayed with words taken from the Kinnock family statement which read: ‘A proud democratic socialist, she campaigned for justice and against poverty all her life.”

Baroness Kinnock, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2017, died at her London home on Sunday, with husband Neil by her side.

The Mail’s comment piece read: “Far from being simply the wife of ex-Labour leader Lord Kinnock, her husband’s political prominence did not prevent Baroness Kinnock pursuing her own causes, while also shouldering his disappointment at Labour’s losses.

“Her career was not without controversy… but dedication to what you truly believe in, and staying around to fight for that, is a vanishingly rare quality these days. It is something many of our current political class would do well to take inspiration from.”

Among those to pay tribute as part of the title’s inside spread were current and former Labour leaders Sir Keir Starmer and Sir Tony Blair.

Sir Keir called her a ‘true fighter for the Labour Party’, adding: “Glenys was a passionate lifelong campaigner for social justice at home and abroad.”
