Daily issues front page plea for reason after three ‘senseless’ deaths

The Nottingham Post has issued a front page reminder that the “senseless” deaths of three people during an attack in the city were down to one individual.

The Post has urged readers to remember that the attacks on Tuesday are “not a reflection on what we are as a city” as it paid tribute to Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates.

Mr Webber, Ms O’Malley-Kumar and Mr Coates were all fatally stabbed, with a 31-year-old suspect, who was originally from West Africa but had been in the UK for “many years” and had settled status, subsequently being arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Post has also opened an online book of condolences in memory of the three dead, while splashing on a tribute to their memories yesterday.

Notts deaths

In an accompanying editorial, the newspaper said: “Three innocent victims, their lives cruelly snatched away in the blink of an eye.

“The events of Tuesday 13 June 2023, will stay with all of us here in Nottingham for a very long time. “Three families torn apart; devastated friends, colleagues and neighbours.

“Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar were doing what thousands of students in our city do every year, heading home from a night out. The actions of one individual meant they never made it. And it’s important to remember at a time like this that these are the actions of an isolated individual.

“Nottingham is a place where all are welcome and should feel safe to live as they wish. The cruel and horrific acts of one person are not a reflection on what we are as a city, or what we want to be known for around the world.”

It added: “This is a dark time for Nottingham. We’re mourning the loss of three people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“It’s hard to find the words at the moment but we wanted to let you, our readers and community, know that we too feel the pain and we’ll do our best to honour the victims’ lives in our coverage.”
