Daily honours ‘one of world’s greatest boxers’ after death aged 77

The death of “one of the world’s greatest boxers of all time” prompted a regional daily to turn its front page black in his memory.

The Edinburgh Evening News ran the special edition yesterday after Ken Buchanan died aged 77.

As well as splashing on Mr Buchanan’s death, the EEN ran a special report over four pages inside the newspaper.

Edinburgh native Mr Buchanan was the undisputed world lightweight champion in 1971.

EEN print editor Helen Gourlay told HTFP: “As soon as we heard the news of Ken Buchanan’s death we felt it deserved special recognition in the Edinburgh Evening News.

“The city has always been extremely proud of the lad from Portobello who is widely considered one of the world’s greatest boxers of all time.

“He has been an inspiration and mentor to thousands of budding boxers and is always spoken of fondly by those who knew him.

“The people of Edinburgh took him into their hearts, most recently when a statue was erected in his honour last year. We knew his passing would be strongly felt throughout the city and wanted to give him a proper send-off in the Evening News.”
