Council wins extension to injunction restricting daily’s coverage

Padraig McShaneAn injunction preventing a regional daily from reporting about incidents at a local council has been extended for a month.

The High Court has granted Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council an extension to an interim injunction preventing the publication of details of any recordings.

The move comes after Belfast Telegraph won the right to reveal the injunction was granted to local authority and four senior officials at a hearing in March.

An order preventing reporting of those proceedings, the effect of which is akin to a superinjunction, had been overturned following a challenge by the Bel Tel’s publisher Mediahuis UK.

Continuing reporting restrictions prohibit disclosure of any information which could lead to the identification of individuals involved in the case.

The action relates to conversations recorded and posted online.

Padraig McShane, an Independent member of the council, told the Bel Tel the issue of possible further legal action in Switzerland and New Zealand was raised during a brief court review he attended at which the injunction was extended.

Councillor McShane, pictured, predicted the costs will be “borne by ratepayers” and added: “It’s turning into an unholy mess.”

Proceedings were adjourned until 5 June.

The Bel Tel has declined to comment on the move.
