Editor reveals far-right conspiracy theorist’s threat to behead him

Rodney Edwards 1An editor has revealed he was forced to increase his personal security after a conspiracy theorist allegedly threatened to behead him.

Rodney Edwards has called for the authorities to take action against those making death threats against journalists, adding the alleged incident has led to him having a panic button installed in his home.

Rodney, who edits Enniskillen-based weekly the Impartial Reporter, posted on X that he had been subjected to the threat two years ago by Covid conspiracy theorist Dara O’Flaherty but it “was not considered a crime” by police.

The revelations came after the Irish media reported claims by Mr O’Flaherty that he would be justified in killing Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and his deputy Micheál Martin.

Posting on X on Sunday, Rodney wrote: “This horrible person threatened to behead me. Yet it was not considered a crime by the police.

“I had to increase my security and the police monitored my home for six weeks. I still have a panic button installed. And here he is still at it. When will the authorities take action?”

Rodney, pictured, added the threat was issued against him while he was working for the Dublin-based Sunday Independent.

He added: “One final note regarding the individual who threatened me in 2021. It’s alarming to see him and his followers evade consequences while continuing to incite violence in Ireland. Sadly, we may not be shocked if they ultimately achieve their harmful goals.”

The far-right figure from Galway in the Republic of Ireland posted a video in which he said he believed that the actions of the government in issues such as the roll-out of the Covid vaccine meant he could carry out “justifiable homicide”.

Rodney has declined to comment further, while HTFP has been unable to reach Mr O’Flaherty about the alllegation.
