City daily lands exclusive on Sunak’s Diwali celebrations

A city daily landed an exclusive after one of its reporters discovered the Prime Minister was celebrating Diwali on its patch.

The Southern Daily Echo was the only news media organisation present on Sunday as Rishi Sunak and his family celebrated the festival at Southampton’s Hindu Temple.

Reporter Jose Ramos had found out about the visit the day before from being out in the city covering Diwali celebrations.

Jose then live blogged the event which made the front page of the following day’s paper.

Daily Echo editor Ben Fishwick told HTFP: “Our reporter Jose found out about the Prime Minister’s visit the day before just by being out in the city reporting on the Diwali celebrations.

“It was great for our reporter to be the only print journalist at the ceremony on Sunday night, he did a great job in taking photos, live blogging and reporting Mr Sunak’s speech.

“It just goes to show – as we all know – how important it is to be out and about in the community.”

Mr Sunak was born and raised in Southampton and had visited the temple many times before becoming Prime Minister last October.
