Weekly reporter honoured for local history coverage

A weekly newspaper reporter has won a civic honour for his local history coverage.

Gareth Dennison has been presented with the Rotherham District Civic Society’s Sheila Cameron Trophy for leading on the Rotherham Advertiser’s nostalgia features.

The award is given for outstanding service in recognising and celebrating Rotherham’s history — matching the ideals of the civic society.

During Covid, the Advertiser began regular double-page features highlighting various aspects of the borough’s heritage.

Speaking last week, Gareth said: “It began as a way of filling space when the lockdown meant fewer events and adverts were appearing in the paper.

“But the level of support and interest in this series has allowed us to continue with in-depth, weekly features.

“We expected it to last for a couple of months but this week’s article is number 128, for anyone keeping count.

“This has only been made possible by the positive reaction we have had from readers, and the support and suggestions we’ve been given to keep delving into Rotherham’s rich history.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised by the civic society, who have been great supporters and a source of knowledge throughout.”
