Weekly celebrates 250 years in business with belated party

A weekly newspaper has belatedly marked a quarter of a millennium in print with a party.

The Hampshire Chronicle has celebrated its 250th anniversary with a reception at Winchester’s Theatre Royal.

The party had been originally due to take place in September but was postponed as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death.

Winchester MP Steve Brine, Winchester City Council leader Martin Tod and deputy lieutenant of Hampshire Amelia Ashton were among those in attendance at last week’s reception.

Editor Kimberley Barber said: “We are by no means the oldest residents in Winchester, but we are one of them.

“For 250 years our purpose and values have not changed – to support Wintonians to thrive, by keeping our readers well informed and supporting businesses to flourish.

“For 250 years the Hampshire Chronicle has celebrated, cried and laughed with its readers and it has championed our city.

“We have always been with Winchester and will continue to be at the heart of the city.”
