Retired journalist and twin sister celebrate 90th birthday together

A former regional journalist and his sisterĀ – thought to be the “oldest twins” in the county where they live – have celebrated their 90th birthday together.

Leslie Davies and his twin sister Joan Jones have marked the milestone after their family threw a surprise party for them.

Leslie began his career in journalism on his hometown newspaper the Oswestry & Border Counties Advertizer, before moving to the South Wales Argus and later the Western Mail.

He later became a business editor with Alcan Aluminium Ltd, where he was responsible for employee newspapers at four locations, before being promoted to managing editor.

During her working life, Joan was a sub-postmistress. She lived in Chirk with her late husband Elmo for more than 50 years.

Leslie’s daughter Helen, who travelled 456 miles from her home in Essex to celebrate her father and aunt’s birthday, was among those at the surprise party.

In its coverage of the event, the Advertizer said the siblings “will now be amongst the oldest twins in Shropshire”.
