Paper marks 250 years in print with front pages exhibition

An exhibition marking a bi-weekly newspaper’s 250th anniversary has opened.

The Derry Journal 250th anniversary exhibition is running at Ulster University’s Magee campus.

The exhibition features front pages from this newspaper spanning its quarter of a millennium in print.

The Journal developed the exhibition to mark the milestone and also to “show how events and people have shaped” the North-West of Ireland.

In a message to readers, Journal editor Brendan McDaid said: “Our story is very much your story and the exhibition features front pages of the Derry Journal from pivotal moments in history, from the very first front page on 3 June 1772 published in the Diamond area by founding editor George Douglas right up the present time.”

The Journal is the oldest regional paper on the island of Ireland.

Its patch straddles the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, covering both County Derry and County Donegal.

The exhibition will run until 26 August.
