Journalist leaves weekly after 26 years to help Ukrainian refugees

Kate Young 2022A journalist is leaving a weekly newspaper after 26 years for a new job helping Ukrainian refugees.

Community content editor Kate Young is saying farewell to the Isle of Wight County Press to take up a job with MAD-Aid.

The Island-based charity, which stands for Medical Aid Delivery, facilitates the transfer of high-quality equipment no longer needed in the United Kingdom to hospitals abroad.

She will serve as grant manager at the charity, which is currently helping Ukrainians in Moldova and those arriving in the UK.

The 47-year-old is already familiar with MAD-Aid, where her husband Hugh and brother Mark are volunteers.

During her time with the County Press, Kate has served editor of Isle of Wight Living magazine and was also the key Island writer on several Newsquest book projects, including the VE Day and Queen’s Platinum Jubilee souvenir publications.

Kate, pictured, told the County Press: “I’ve had an incredible time at the County Press and I’ve lived through many changes.

“I have seen it go from black and white to colour, from broadsheet to tabloid — and I was even the reporter on duty for the Millennium shift.”
