Tory candidate apologises after false accusation against newspaper

Charlie EvansAn election candidate has apologised to a local newspaper after wrongly claiming it had snubbed him.

Charlie Evans has said sorry to Welsh language title Llanw Llŷn after accusing it of not inviting him to contribute to an election profile.

Mr Evans, who is standing for the Conservatives in the Welsh Senedd seat of Dwyfor Meirionnydd, had himself demanded an apology from Llanw Llŷn after posting on Twitter about the matter.

The title is part Papurau Bro, a network of 58 hyperlocal Welsh language newspapers, according to Nation.Cymru.

Mr Evans wrote on Twitter: “Disappointed that Llanw Llŷn didn’t ask me to contribute to the paper on their election profile.

“It’s important voters are given the full choice of candidates this election.”

In response, the paper replied in Welsh with a picture of an email it had sent him.

It wrote: “As you can see, the editor of Llanw emailed you on March 25 inviting you to respond.

“Can we have an apology please?”

Mr Evans replied: “Thank you Llanw Llŷn. Unfortunately, the request reached my ‘junk’ folder. Apologies from the heart.”
