Regional daily in running to be crowned football fans’ favourite newspaper

Nick WestbyA regional daily is facing national competition in a bid to be crowned football fans’ favourite UK newspaper.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has been nominated for the Newspaper of the Year title at the Football Supporters’ Association Awards for 2021.

The YEP is the only regional newspaper to be shortlisted and its nomination comes as a result of its coverage of Leeds United.

The Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Times are also shortlisted in the category, as well as specialist publication The Non-League Paper.

YEP sports editor Nick Westby, pictured, said: “Covering Leeds United is a 24/7 job for our sports team, and if you think that’s exaggerating, Lee Sobot pulled all-night shifts recently to mine stories out of Raphinha’s exploits with Brazil.

“We’re a young team, as David O’Leary used to say, ably led by chief football writer Graham Smyth up top, with Lee, Joe Urquhart and Flora Snelson the three players tucked in behind him.

“Tony Dorigo and David Prutton provide expert insight from defensive midfield and we have a backbone of experienced editors and managers shoring up the defence.”

Voting is open until midnight on 16 November and an awards ceremony will be held at The Londoner Hotel in Leicester Square, London, on Monday 29 November.
