New course launched to help working journalists refresh media ethics

Christina BorgA new course to help working journalists refresh their knowledge of media ethics has been launched by the National Council for the Training of Journalists.

The NCTJ has teamed up with the Independent Press Standards Organisation to create a free, interactive e-learning course.

The course guides learners through the work of IPSO and to the key requirements of the Editors’ Code of Practice and highlights the importance for journalists to feel confident about the regulations which underpin their work, featuring a range of key IPSO rulings as cas studies.

It is intended to be equally suitable for prospective journalists wanting an introduction to IPSO, and for working journalists keen to refresh their knowledge.

NCTJ Journalism Skills Academy manager Christina Borg, pictured, said: “We’re delighted to have partnered with the Independent Press Standards Organisation on this valuable e-learning course.

“It is vital that those who work within the industry continue to aspire to the highest ethical standards.”

Charlotte Dewar, chief executive of IPSO, added: “IPSO is delighted to have supported the NCTJ to produce this training module, which focuses on the principles of IPSO regulation, the Editors’ Code and key IPSO rulings.

“We hope the new module will be a convenient, accessible way for journalists and trainees to update and expand their knowledge of the Editors’ Code and how press regulation works.”
