Daily names 118 dead women on front page to demand change on male violence

A daily newspaper used its front page to name every woman in the United Kingdom killed at the hands of a man in the past year.

The Scotsman chose to splash on the issue of male violence against women after Labour’s Jess Phillips read out the names of the 118 victims to fellow MPs in Parliament.

The Scotsman’s front page on Friday, which featured photographs of some of those named, comes amid a national debate on the safety of women following the death of Sarah Everard.

Wayne Couzens, 48, has been charged with her kidnap and murder.

Scotsman Dead Women Count

The Edinburgh-based daily aims to highlight the work of the Counting Dead Women and Femicide Census campaigns, which aim to record information about women who have been killed in the UK and the men who have killed them.

Euan McGrory, JPIMedia’s editor (print) for Scotland, told HTFP on Friday: “We were well aware of the work of the Counting Dead Women and Femicide Census campaigns thanks to the work of two of our exceptional writers Gina Davidson and Dani Garavelli.

“The huge response to the death of Sarah Everard, especially the number of women coming forward on social media to tell of their experiences of threats, abuse and feeling unsafe, sparked a debate in the newsroom about how we might best capture the spirit of that demand for change.

“Jess Phillips’s speech in which she, once again, read out the names of all the women who have been killed in the UK in the last year gave us the inspiration to carry the names of all 118 women. We felt it was important to carry the pictures of the faces of as many of these women as we could as well.

“Gina came up with the headline which went on top of her moving piece about Phillips’s speech and the background to it.

“The response to the front page has been overwhelmingly positive. We wanted to play our part in making sure these issues are not brushed under the carpet and I think we have succeeded in a small way.

“We hope it will lead more people to learn more about the Counting Dead Women and Femicide Census campaigns which inspired it. Our team really appreciated all the messages of thanks that we have received today and in particular one from Jess Philips.”
