Regional newspapers have joined the rest of the country in marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The UK is commemorating the end of the Second World War in Europe with a Bank Holiday, and local press titles have run special editions for the occasion.

The celebrations have been somewhat scaled down due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, with lockdown measures causing the cancellation of many events to mark the day.

Among those to highlight the “virtual” nature of the commemorations was the Ashbourne News Telegraph.

The Peterborough Telegraph noted the similarities between the challenges facing the country then and now with its front page.

The Warrington Guardian called on readers to “raise a glass” to those who fought.

While the Gloucestershire Echo was another weekly title to splash on the commemorations yesterday ahead of today’s holiday.

Daily title the Lancashire Post also teed up its coverage of the day with a preview of how veterans were planning to mark the occasion.
