Ex-daily journalist produces charity football magazine for university project

A journalist who went to university after leaving a regional daily has produced a football magazine to raise funds for charity.

Tom Oakley has produced a publication called The Wolves Way for fans of Wolverhampton Wanderers, which he will sell to raise money for charity the Wolves Foundation.

Tom, pictured, began his career as an apprentice at Wolverhampton daily the Express & Star in 2014 and later became a full-time reporter.

He left the newspaper in 2018 and worked as a communications officer for Severn Hospice, before enrolling last year on the sports journalism MA at Sheffield Hallam University.

The magazine has been produced as part of his final project at the university and features interviews with former Wanderers players including Carl Ikeme, Mel Eves and Jack Price.

Tom is aiming to sell 100 copies online so he can afford to print the magazine.

He told his old paper: “I’m a huge Wolves fan and passionate about print journalism so it just made sense to produce a magazine about the Old Gold and Black.

“I went to university last year after previously spending four years at the Express & Star since I was 19.

“The Wolves Foundation does some fantastic work to create opportunities for local people and the more copies I can sell means we can make a bigger donation to the charity.”
