An editor has dedicated a regional daily’s front page to “top class” school students who have suffered “a year of anxiety”.
Eastern Daily Press editor David Powles has been tribute to his patch’s A-level and GCSE students after controversies over grading owing to the coronavirus crisis.
David honoured the students by splashing on a front page editorial praising their achievements this morning.
The Norwich-based daily also ran 12 pages of GCSE results coverage inside the newspaper.
In his editorial, David wrote: “It has been a year of anxiety for Norfolk’s 16 and 18-year-olds as coronavirus has played havoc with their education and exams.
“Lockdown shut down their schools and colleges – and led to the axing of all GCSE and A-level exams.
“They were separated from their friends, robbed of proms, then thrown into the turmoil of a huge political row about how their grades were calculated.
“The controversy threatened to cheapen their efforts and make people forget the hard-working young people who really mattered.”
He added: “Forget Covid, forget the politics, and remember that every young person has earned their grades. This is a day to celebrate.”
Earlier this week the Yorkshire Post called for the sacking of Education Secretary Gavin Williamson over his handling of the A-level results controversy.
