Weekly reveals sale and revamp of historic office as it marks 175 years in print

A weekly newspaper has announced the sale and planned refurbishment of its historic office as the title marks 175 years in print.

The Coleraine Chronicle’s listed Head Office home, on Railway Road, has been sold to husband and wife team Roger and Abigail Glasgow, who will revamp the building before the paper moves back in along with other businesses.

In the meantime, the Chronicle will be based a short distance away at temporary offices on Lodge Road, in Coleraine.

The announcement was made inside a special 32-page souvenir supplement produced to celebrate the Chronicle’s 175th anniversary.

The supplement’s cover, pictured, featured the paper’s first front page from Saturday 13 1844, which was then devoted entirely to advertising.

It also included nostalgic contributions from current and former members of staff, including ex-editors, as well as features on the Chronicle’s history, old photographs and its most noteworthy stories.

Editor John Fillis said: “No matter how we get the news out to our readers, one thing remains paramount – trust.

“Readers have to know that what they are reading is true and unbiased, never more so in the age of ‘fake news and bloggers’.”

“It’s why the Chronicle has managed to maintain its position as the most widely read newspaper in town – and just one reason that will continue to see it keeping that position.

“This special supplement is a fitting testament to the loyalty of our readers, staff, contributors and advertisers down through all those 175 years.”
