Daily to move to new office as home for half a century sold to university

A regional daily is set to move after its owner agreed a deal to sell its home for more than half a century to a university.

Newsquest and the University of Worcester have exchanged contracts for the sale of Berrow’s House, where the Worcester News has been based since 1965.

Newsquest says it is in the process of finalising alternative offices within Worcester for the approximately 85 employees based at Berrow’s House, on Hylton Road, and hopes to move in spring next year.

Other titles currently produced on the site, pictured below, include Berrow’s Worcester Journal, reputed to be the oldest newspaper in the world, and the Evesham Journal.

Julia Lancett, managing director for Newsquest Midlands South, said: “Although we’ll be sad to leave Berrow’s House as we have so much history here, we’re looking forward to moving to a modern office which is more fit for purpose for our digitally-led business, while remaining at the heart of Worcester.”

Berrow’s House also formerly hosted printing presses until summer 2016, when production moved to Oxford. The university is expected to take possession of the building by 1 July.

A university spokesman told the News: “Berrow’s House will, along with the University Arena, Riverside Building and planned international inclusive cricket centre, form part of the University’s Severn Campus, whose focus will be on health, wellbeing and inclusive sport.

“We hope that this landmark building, just a short walk from our St John’s and City campuses, will have a new lease of life through its transformation into a vibrant educational centre with further high quality teaching and learning spaces for our students, particularly our students studying to be health professionals.”
