Suspect hands himself in hours after mugshot appears on daily front page

An assault suspect handed himself into police hours after seeing his mugshot on a regional daily’s front page.

A Swindon Advertiser splash on the “town’s most wanted” last week featured an appeal for six different people to come forward over a variety of alleged offences.

Louis Webb, 24, was one of those featured and handed himself in to a police station the same afternoon.

Mr Webb was wanted by Wiltshire Police in relation to offences of assault and evading police.

Both the original appeal and a follow-up provided “thousands” of views on the Advertiser’s website.

Deputy editor Michelle Tompkins told HTFP: “As part of the town’s community, the Adver was more than happy to work with Wiltshire Police on this campaign to help find the people on their Most Wanted list.

“We were convinced our readers would recognise some, of not all, of the faces in the rogue’s gallery, and it was only a matter of hours after we posted the story that the first of the six was located.

“It turned out to be our best read story of the day, while the follow-up on a suspect handing himself in brought in thousands more views – it seems the people of Swindon are keen to do their bit to crack down on crime too.”
