Ex-daily editor to join university on former patch

A former regional daily editor is to take up a senior role with a university on his old patch.

Damian Bates, who was editor-in-chief of Aberdeen dailies the Press & Journal and Evening Express until last September, is joining Robert Gordon University to spearhead a new drive to increase its role in social and political debate.

Already a visiting professor at the university, Damian, will now take a lead role in formulating detailed plans for the proposed initiative, which will be announced later this year.

Damian, below, began his 28-year career in journalism as a reporter at Middlesbrough’s Teesside Gazette, also serving as crime reporter and deputy business editor before moving to Aberdeen to join the Evening Express in 2003.

Said Damian: “I’m thrilled to be officially joining Robert Gordon University, having spent several enjoyable years as a visiting professor,” said Bates.

“I know how important the institution is to the people and the economy of the North-East of Scotland, and I’m very excited about expanding my role at RGU at a time when it is taking further steps to being even more bold and progressive.

“RGU has always been at the centre of innovation and ingenuity; you only have to look at its incredible history to see that.

“This is the perfect time to join RGU, helping to shape the university’s position as a thought leader, as we begin the next chapter in its journey.”

After leaving journalism, Damian launched his own consultancy, Abraitis and Co, alongside a number of associates with expertise in strategic communications, leadership, public affairs, digital transformation, innovation and mentoring.

He is also chairman of international B2B marketing company Fifth Ring, associate director of leading drone inspection and surveying specialist Texo DSI (UKCS) Ltd, and a member of Opportunity North East.
