Regional daily helps family win road safety fight in tragic boy’s memory

A bereaved family have won a road safety battle fought in memory of their five-year-old son thanks to a regional daily.

Lennon Toland was struck and killed by a van that had mounted the pavement to gain access to a makeshift car park as he made his way home from school in Glasgow last year.

Over a year on from the tragedy, the street is set to be lined with bollards to stop unsafe parking and protect other children.

The Evening Times had reported that Lennon’s mum Leanne thought her grief has been worsened by vans similar to that which hit her boy continuing to park on the pavement.

The local community, including John Mason MSP for Shettleston, and Michelle Ferns, local councillor for the same area, have been campaigning for the street to be made safer in the months since the incident.

Lennon’s grandfather Brian contacted the Evening Times to say the paper had “done the family proud”.

Evening Times editor Graham Shields said: “Our reporter Holly Lennon has been in contact with the Toland family since the tragic day Lennon died.

“In a terrible situation Holly has told the family’s side of the story with compassion and helped them campaign for road safety improvements that have benefitted the whole community.”

The Toland family are now calling on Glasgow City Council to dedicate a play park in his memory.
