New owner for former newspaper office which became hotel

A landmark former newspaper office which subsequently turned into an hotel has a new owner after it fell into liquidation.

The Scotsman Hotel, in Edinburgh, has been bought by Glasgow-based G1 with more than 90 employees at the five-star establishment being transferred to its books.

The Scotsman newspaper moved into the building by the city’s North Bridge in the 1900s and remained there until moving to new offices at Holyrood in 2001.

The hotel, which still bears the paper’s original masthead, was put on the market in November after it fell into liquidation in June last year.

Stefan King, who runs G1, said: “We have enjoyed huge support from Edinburgh City Council, the patrons and the teams employed in our Edinburgh venues over the years.

“The acquisition of The Scotsman Hotel is a significant reflection of a continued commitment to the city.

“We aspire to build on the iconic presence and reputation of the Scotsman Hotel to be at the forefront of hotel venues in the city.”
