Daily crime reporter to shave head on Facebook Live

A regional daily’s crime reporter is set to shave his head live on Facebook tomorrow for charity.

Carl Eve will undergo the cut on the Plymouth Herald’s channel on the social networking site.

Carl, who has worked at the herald for 10 years, is hoping to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of the charity’s ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign.

He was inspired to undertake the challenge after seeing close friends and family battle cancer in recent years.

Said Carl: “Most have won, but some haven’t and I’ve seen their partners and children live with the pain of having to carry on without them. In recent months I’ve also watched as friends have gone through the complete anguish of seeing their own children battle cancer. Again, thanks to the efforts of medical staff and the support of their families and friends, their fight looks to be winning.

“In the last few weeks, while working as a reporter for The Herald, I’ve also watched as beautiful young women and handsome young men in Plymouth ‘Brave the Shave’, cutting off their hair to raise funds for Macmillan’s nurses and also standing in solidarity with people they know and love in their fight against cancer.

“I really like my long hair. I know it’s not fashionable for a 50-year-old to try and keep the grunge look but I’m quietly smug when bald men – especially police officers I often speak with – make jokes about my hair, knowing that deep down they’re just jealous.

“But then a couple of weekends ago, I saw a woman in my local supermarket, with thin tufts of hair at random points on her head. No hat, no silk scarf, no beanie. I just thought – she hasn’t braved the shave, she’s braving cancer, telling it to get stuffed and to hell with how it looks. There’s no shame or embarrassment in that, just bravery.

“If others can do it, I think I can handle looking like a Mitchell brother for a few months. As long as people help me raise as much money for Macmillan as possible.”
