Freelance cycling journalist dies while out jogging

A respected cycling journalist has died suddenly of a suspected heart attack while out jogging in Bristol.

Friends, colleagues and fellow runners have posted tributes online to the well-respected cyclist and runner Steve Worland.

Paramedics were on the scene in minutes on Saturday but were unable to save the 58-year-old.

Steve was a father, a freelance writer and an expert on mountain biking. He was a former editor of What Mountain Bike magazine and a prolific writer, with many saying his articles encouraged them to take up cycling.

A statement from What Future Publishing, which publishes What Mountain Bike, said: “His knowledge and passion for all aspects of cycling was second to none and we will miss him as a colleague and friend.”

Ashton Court Bristol Parkrun posted on their Facebook page: “It is with great sadness that we report that our fellow parkrunner, Steve Worland, collapsed and died at the Ashton Court parkrun event on March 29, 2014. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

A memorial run is being organised in his memory.
