Half marathon challenge for weekly news reporter

A weekly news reporter is getting on her running shoes to take part in the Stroud Half Marathon on Sunday.

Hayley Mortimer, 23, is used to meeting deadlines in the newsroom but she is taking on an entirely new challenge when she runs the 13-mile town race with around 2,000 other competitors this weekend.

She is raising money for The Door Youth Project, which supports 11 to 25 year olds and their families in Stroud, after becoming familiar with the charity during her 15 months with the Newsquest-owned paper.

“While working as a reporter at the SNJ I have seen the great work that The Door does for young people and families in Stroud and I am hoping I can raise a few hundred pounds for the charity,” said Hayley.

“As part of my training I have been attending personal training sessions at Stratford Park Leisure Centre with Sam Ballinger and they have really helped me improve my fitness and stamina.”

Hayley, who has raised £135 so far, is hoping to reach the finish line in under two hours on Sunday.

“I know I should have no problem finishing the race as I have run 13 miles in training but I am still a little bit nervous,” she added.

“I just hope the environment on the day gives me that extra boost to get me over the finish line.”
