Funnies file: One ‘L’ of an FoI request

Never let it be said that local newspapers don’t flag up the inspirational success stories of those who try, try and try again.

For a Freedom of Information request by the Warrington Guardian’s news team has revealed a 33-year-old woman took a staggering 15 attempts to pass her driving test.

The persistent motorist, who shelled out up to £1,125 on test bookings and £20 per hour on lessons, was eventually able to ditch her L plates although she was not alone.

The weekly newspaper’s request also revealed one determined 22-year-old woman took 12 attempts while four women and one man took 10 attempts to pass.

While there were more girls than boys in the list of failed attempts over six or more, women did come out on top when it comes to overall pass rate.

Paul Winstanley, a driving instructor from Great Sankey in Warrington, said: “I think sometimes it’s the fear and people put a brick wall in front of themselves and think they can’t do it rather than taking in the information.”

A total of 40 people took between six and nine tests before finally passing in the town with a 54-year-old woman recorded as the oldest driver to take six or more attempts.
