Hundreds raised at editor’s fruit throwing event

A charity event held on a beach organised by a former newspaper editor who now runs his own magazine raised hundreds of pounds despite bad weather.

The tenth annual orange and lemon ‘flingathon’ organised by Worthing Journal editor Paul Holden was held earlier this month at Worthing beach.

The event, launched by Paul in 2002 when he was the editor of the now defunct Worthing Sentinel, saw more than 100 people turn out in heavy rain, each paying a £1 to take part.

Said Paul: ” We had 120 or so there, but would have been at least double if weather had been better.”

A total of  £281.50 was raised after local company Kingsley Eco Solutions contributed £150.

Proceeds will go towards Worthing wheelchair tennis player Lauren Jones, 16, who is bidding to represent Great Britain at the 2012 London Paralympics.
