Ken Clarke to address Society of Editors’ conference

Justice secretary Kenneth Clarke is the latest addition to the line-up of speakers for next month’s Society of Editors’ conference.

The Cabinet minister, who is responsible for libel law reform, will join some of the biggest names in the industry, including national and regional editors, who will be debating the future of media relationships and regulation.

The conference will open on Sunday evening with the Society of Editors’ annual lecture delivered by the Chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten.

Monday will take the form of a rolling debate facilitated by Steve Hewlett of BBC Radio Four’s Media Show, focusing on the future of self regulation and the relationship between the press, politicians, the police and the public.

Other confirmed speakers include Labour MP Tom Watson who led the attack on Rupert Murdoch over phone-hacking, and national newspaper editors Alan Rusbridger, James Harding and Chris Blackhurst.

Northcliffe Media managing director Steve Auckland, Peter Barron of Google and newspaper analyst Jim Chisholm, will speak at the Tuesday morning 20:20 Vision session which focuses on where the industry will be in ten years’ time.

The session will have a new dimension in the form of a report on the special survey commissioned by the SoE exploring editors’ attitudes to the future of the industry, as featured on HTFP last week.

The conference, at Runnymede, will take place on 13-15 November.
