Universities in link-up for multimedia news week

Journalism students from a UK university have teamed up with their counterparts in Finland to launch a European multimedia project.

The students from the University of Central Lancashire have joined forces with those at the Tampere University of Technology to produce two newspapers and a rich media website during the cross-platform mobile news week.

Telecoms research centre Nikua is also involved, with part of the project involving testing its Newelo editorial content management platform using N900 mobile phones provided by Nokia.

The postgraduate and undergraduate students from UCLan’s print, broadcast, photography, publishing and international journalism courses will be linked to Finnish students with daily news conferences during the week.

Paul Egglestone, digital coordinator at UCLan’s journalism school, said: “This ambitious project will allow students from both universities to display their abilities as multimedia journalists.

“We hope this groundbreaking work will help set the agenda for teaching a new generation of journalists.”

A representative from Tampere University of Technology has joined the team in Preston to conduct research on mobile news delivery.
