Rugby legend joins weekly newspaper's cricket team

A weekly newspaper signed up a World Cup-winning rugby player for a cricket match with a difference.

Jason Robinson, who played in the victorious England side of 2003, was the star of the show when he joined the Chorley and Leyland Guardian All Stars, who took on a visually-impaired cricket team.

The paper’s team included Guardian editor Chris Maguire, Phoenix Nights actor Ted Robbins, who is now a presenter with BBC Radio Lancashire, and several of his fellow presenters for the charity match.

Both teams braved constant rain to put on a 16-over-a-side game for spectators, which raised funds for a local hospice.

And the All Stars eventually won in the last over, with Robinson as the top scorer with 40 – despite it being the first time he had ever played cricket.

Chris said: “Jason was a natural sportsman, which meant he was in a minority. He stayed behind afterwards and really seemed to enjoy it.”
