The pass rate for journalists sitting the National Certificate Examination has remained steady with just over half the candidates gaining senior status.
In a topical examination held on 5 March at 15 centres around the country, candidates were asked to write a news report on planned industrial action by airline staff.
Of the 186 hopefuls who sat the exam, 97 were successful – a pass rate of 52pc.
The figure was broadly in line with pass rates for other recent NCEs – 51pc in November 2009, 48pc in July 2009, and 49pc in March 2009.
As well as the News Report, candidates were also tested in the News Interview, Newspaper Practice and Logbook categories.
To qualify as a senior, trainees have to be successful in all four papers.
Pass rates for the individual sections were: News Report 60pc, News Interview 65pc, Newspaper Practice 63pc, Logbook 95pc.
The chief examiner said there were some excellent news stories and newspaper practice answers in all four sections and congratulated candidates for their achievement.

I see someone passed the NCE for sub-editors? Do they still exist.
I thought they were all reporters or glorified office assistants now under the loony “layout before text” regime imposed on hundreds of hapless papers.
